At the center of the captivating rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to care for his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the peak were his main companions. Day upon day, looking out for his wards inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false website alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
